Up on the mountain above the city of Ribeauvillé, 3 ruins of castles can be seen :
The Saint-Ulrich, or Grand-Ribeaupierre, at 520 meters high, shows a nice roman castle with a beautiful room of the knights decorated with nine large windows each one with a different oculus.
The Guirsberg castle, or Stein, is located - as the Alsacian Dictionary of Historical Monuments recalls - "at the range of an arrow" of the Saint-Ulrich castle ; i.e. maybe an allusion to a tragic legend about these two castles.
Haut-Ribeaupierre, or Altenkastel, located at 645 meters high, has been built on a watch station that was established since the forth century. The circular dungeon gives it a special silhouette. During mid-ages, the castle was also used for a time as a prison.
